The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has started a destocking programme in Mandera County to reduce the effects of drought.

County co-ordinator Hussein Alio said the programme involves buying goats and cattle from pastoralists, slaughtering them and distributing the meat to those in hardest-hit areas.

“We are targeting to slaughter 12,000 goats and 4,000 head of cattle in different locations in the six sub- counties.

“We received Sh10 million from the European Union (EU) through the ministry of Agriculture to run the programme,” he said.

Mr Alio said they were paying Sh2,000 for every goat and Sh10,000 for cattle.

“We are buying and slaughtering goats and cattle affected by the ravaging drought ,” he said.

He said schools were the biggest beneficiaries of the programme which he however warned was facing challenges, including communication

breakdown in areas where network masts have been destroyed by Al-Shabaab in Mandera.
