Tanzania has suspended the registration of new non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as it embarks on verifying the existing ones, a senior official said on Monday.
The move was announced by Sihaba Nkinga, Community Development Permanent Secretary, when she launched the NGOs certification programme which began on Monday and is scheduled to run up to September 4 this year.
The process will help to establish the number of registered NGOs in the country and the role they play in the society, Ms Nkinga said. She added that NGOs that will fail to cooperate risk being de-registered.
"As we carry out verification at zonal levels, we will also conduct an evaluation of the verification and give the final analysis of the whole exercise," she said.
She said the government has also suspended the registration of new NGOs to allow stakeholders to consult on the way forward. The ban on new registrations will remain in place till November 30 this year.
