Top businessmen and public servants were among 59 Kenyans awarded State commendations by President Uhuru Kenyatta as part of Tuesday’s Jamhuri Day celebrations.
Equity Holdings #ticker:EQTY chairman Peter Munga and Bamburi Cement #ticker:BAMB and Sanlam Kenya chairman John Simba were bestowed the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) title.
Peter Muthoka, the owner of Acceler Global Logistics, and a former top shareholder of CMC Motors, was also given the EGH title alongside Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka and Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.
KCB Group #ticker:KCB managing director Joshua Oigara and Gideon Muriuki, his counterpart at Co-operative Bank #ticker:COOP, were given the honour of Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS).
“In recognition of distinguished and outstanding services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities, I… confer awards and honours to the following persons,” President Kenyatta noted in a special gazette notice.
Other CBS awardees were Prof George Magogha, the Kenya National Examinations Council chairman, Salaries and Remuneration Commission outgoing chairperson Sarah Serem, and Kenya Revenue Authority commissioner-general John Njiraini. Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairperson Isaac Hassan and Sports secretary Hassan Wario also received the coveted recognition.
Kenya has a long list of awards and honours with the highest being Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (CGH), which can only be bestowed on the president.
The commendations, normally announced during public events like Jamuhuri Day and Madaraka Day, are handed out to individuals based on their line of work or business, their rank and perceived impact on society.
A committee chaired by the deputy president, cabinet secretaries for public service and national heritage, two governors and the Public Service Commission chairperson draw the list of recipients of the awards.
The National Honours Act states that the president may, on the advice of the committee, suspend or revoke a national honour where the “person acts in a manner that is inconsistent with the honour.”
