A new report by a United Nations panel of experts criticises a Kenyan politician for making “veiled threats” against members of South Sudan opposition groups, especially those based in Kenya.

The report cites comments posted on Facebook by Weston Wanjohi Wahome, a National Vision Party candidate for Parliament from Roysambu.

Mr Wahome also “calls himself the regional coordinator of the Friends of South Sudan in East Africa,” the UN panel remarks.

Its report points out that in a Facebook post last year Mr Wahome “taunted” James Gatdet Dak, a spokesman for the South Sudan opposition whom Kenyan authorities arrested and deported six months ago.

Human Rights Watch said in January Mr Gatdet was being held, without charge, at the Juba headquarters of the National Security Services.

“Say hi to Mathiang Anyoor!”, Mr Wahome wrote on Facebook in a posting referring to Mr Gatdet.

The UN report describes Mathiang Anyoor as a Dinka tribal militia that has taken part in South Sudan government offensives that have targeted civilians as well as rebel forces.

Mr Wahome’s “Facebook page regularly posts other veiled threats and incitement against South Sudanese opposition groups, especially those based in Kenya,” the UN panel says.
