Kenya's electoral body chairman Wafula Chebukati has vowed not to resign despite calls from politicians who say it will be good for the country.

"I know there are elements who would love nothing more than to hear me announce my resignation at this point.

“Resignation would be the easiest thing to do but I am determined to make this work," Mr Chebukati told journalists at the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi.

"I will not go down as the chairman who plunged the country into a deeper crisis,” he said.

A section of opposition Nasa MPs had on Wednesday called for Mr Chebukati’s resignation, citing lack of independence and political interference from the ruling Jubilee Party.

MPs Opiyo Wandayi (Unguja), Chris Wamalwa (Kiminini) and Elisha Odhiambo (Gem) said the reasons cited in electoral commissioner Roselyn Akombe's resignation statement was an indication that the commission is just an appendage of Jubilee.

Step aside

Mr Chebukati on Wednesday asked electoral officials adversely mentioned over poll irregularities to step aside and allow special project team to manage the repeat poll.

He was accompanied by October 26 fresh presidential election project team members Salome Oyugi (Legal) and Tabitha Mutemi (Communication).

Nasa leader Raila Odinga pulled out of the presidential race insisting that he can only participate after the electoral commission (IEBC) is reformed.
