Trade union officials holding public office asked to quit

Labour Cabinet Secretary Phyllis Kandie has directed 11 trade union officials, including Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary-General William Sossion, who are now public officers to relinquish their positions.

In a special gazette notice dated December 13, Ms Kandie ordered trade union officials holding elective or nominated positions in Parliament or county assemblies to quit office.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the following persons being state officers as per provisions of Article 77 and 260 of the constitution cease to hold office immediately as trade union officials in their respective trade unions,” said Ms Kandie.

Those affected by the directive include: Nyeri Governor Edward Kahiga, Baringo Governor Stanley Kiptis, ODM nominated MP Wilson Sossion both of Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut).

Others are, Bungoma Woman Representative Catherine Wambyanga who also doubles as Kenya Union of Post Primary Education (Kuppet) Gender Secretary, Bomet Central MP Ronald Tonui and who is Kuppet assistant treasurer, Nyatike MP Tom Odege who is the current secretary-general of Union of Kenya Civil Servants.

MP Emuhaya Omboko Milemba who is also Kuppet national chairman, Mulei Mwalowa, John Mwamusi, Florence Bore who is former Kuppet Kericho branch gender secretary and Richard Cheserem.
