Coffee farmers in Central Kenya have received more than Sh314 million as pay for the crop this season.
In Kirinyaga, farmers earned the highest amount after receiving payment at the rate of Sh119 per kilogramme of cherry delivered at Thirikwa factory.
Though most cooperatives are yet to exhaust their sale for the season, prices have mostly been spurred by the low production experienced countrywide due to drought.
The high prices have also been attributed to good quality coffee where most factories had premium grades.
Most co-operatives in Nyeri, Kirinyaga and Meru counties have seen an increase in prices compared to the last coffee season.
Baragwi Farmers Society in Gichugu had the best quality coffee, according to County Agriculture Executive Ngundo Warui.
“Farmers were able to fetch more money due to rising demand for the commodity in the world market,” said Mr Ngundo.
In Nyeri, Gikanda, Gachatha and Barichu coffee societies have paid farmers higher rates compared to last year.
