The Kenya Network Information Centre (Kenic) — a non-profit organisation that administers Internet addresses system has slashed the retail prices of the dot ke domain by 66.7 per cent to Sh1,000 in a bid to encourage uptake by more Kenyan firms.

Kenic has previously been charging Sh3,000 for the .ke domain, which made many individuals and companies instead opt for the .com, .net .info among others whose retail price averages between Sh1,500 and Sh2,000.

The high price is blamed for the low uptake of the .ke domain, with the latest statistics by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) indicating that Kenic had managed to sell only 32,508 .ke names as at June. South Africa’s .za leads Africa countries with more than a million domains.

The reduction of retail prices for the local domain names comes barely a week after the CA delinked itself from Kenic’s board to set the stage for licensing of a new body that will manage the Internet address system.
