Three top Nyeri officials charged with corruption

Three Nyeri county government officials were Thursday charged with corruption and abuse of office.

John Mwangi Maina, the executive secretary for Land and Infrastructure, Martin Kanjuaigwa Wamwea, the Finance and Planning executive, and chief of staff Simon Wachira Kagiri were charged with six counts of failure to comply with the procurement law and funds management procedures, as well as abuse of office.

Mr Maina was accused of irregularly awarding Pleng Limited a contract for audit consultancy services for roads and civil works without the approval of the county tender committee.

Mr Wamwea was alleged to have authorised the payment of Sh3.7 million to the company without supporting documents.

Mr Kagiri, on the other hand, was charged with approving the payment of Sh3.7 million to Pleng on December 16, 2014 in Nyeri town, thereby irregularly using his position as acting accounting officer for planning and infrastructure development.

He was also accused of approving payments to the firm whose contract was issued without the requisite supporting documents.

Wesley Nyamache, senior prosecution counsel from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, said he would supply the defence with witness statements.

The three denied the charges before Nyeri Chief Magistrate John Onyiego.

They were released on a Sh1 million bond each or a cash bail of Sh300,000 each.

The case will be mentioned on July 23 and heard on August 11.
