The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has repeated for the umpteenth time that electricity prices will come down, partly with the injection into the national grid of power from cheaper wind and solar sources.

From last Thursday, some domestic consumers and retailers have benefited from the recent coming on board of electricity from the Lake Turkana Wind Power, whose full capacity is estimated at 310 megawatts.

More renewable sourcing is expected from Garissa solar power, possibly removing the fuel cost charges from consumer bills.

All this sounds encouraging, especially for an economy where electricity is listed as one of the most expensive in the region.

The ERC’s focus on renewables cannot be faulted because of the benefits galore.

However, we urge the government agencies responsible for power generation, pricing and distribution to graduate from making lofty promises to making actual cuts, especially by completely retiring thermal production.
