Peter Tabichi, a Science and Maths teacher from Nakuru, has done both Kenya and the teaching profession proud after being named teacher of the year by a global award scheme run by the Varkey Foundation.

His victory, however, is not just a high moment for himself alone even though he gets to take home the Sh100 million prize money.

It is a victory for the country as well as for teachers and learners.

Mr Tabichi’s victory should refocus attention to the noble profession where dedication, selflessness and sacrifice were the guiding principles for those seeking to become teachers.

The win should excite other teachers to be more willing to render their services across the country and region, irrespective of the challenges.

It should also be a wake-up call for employers to recognise and motivate teachers so they can focus on changing the world positively.

Indeed, congratulations are in order for Mr Tabichi for his rare dedication in supporting the community as a teacher, but also for dedicating 80 percent of his earnings to worthy social causes.

Well done, Mwalimu.
