UN awards Justice Martha Koome for child advocacy

Court of Appeal judge Martha Koome has been voted the runner-up for the UN Kenya Person of The Year 2020.

Justice Koome was recognised for her advocacy for the rights of children in conflict with the law as well as child victims.

The appellate court judge joined the Judiciary in 2003 and served in several stations among them Nakuru and Nairobi before she was elevated the Court of Appeal.

She was among the persons who were interviewed for the position of the Deputy Chief Justice but lost to the current holder Philomena Mwilu.

Justice Koome once described her court as the “most accessible, efficient and friendlier”, was instrumental in the establishment of the Family Division of the High Court.

A statement from the Judiciary congratulated Justice Koome.

She chaired a special taskforce of the National Council on the Administration of Justice on children matters that has highlighted the plight of children in the Justice system.

The taskforce mobilised and coordinated other stakeholders and they reviewed the Children's Act to align it with the constitution, developed practice directions to deal with children during this pandemic.
