Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has set aside close to Sh400 million to upgrade the stalled Mathare-Korogocho hospital to a Level-Five health facility.

Construction works on the health facility, which has been around since 1989, had stalled for several years before President Uhuru Kenyatta in July instructed the Major General Mohammed Badi-led administration to take over the upgrade of the facility.

NMS Director of Health Services Dr Josephine Kibaru-Mbae said the hospital could start operating as early as April next year.

She said the upgrade of the county health facility began in July following the directive from the President. The contractor returned to the site to revive the stalled works, which is now at 80 percent complete.

“Since July when the President told us to take it up and finish it, the contractor came back on site and has been given a budget of close to Sh400 million for the project. So far, it is at about 80 percent complete,” said Dr Kibaru-Mbae.

The director pointed out that on completion, the facility will have an intensive care unit, kidney dialysis centre, theatres as well as other wards.

A Level-Five hospital is a county referral hospital with more than 100-bed capacity, inpatient department and is run by a chief executive officer who must be a doctor by profession.
