Covid-19 kitty hits Sh2.6 billion

Donations to the national emergency kitty launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta to support vulnerable Kenyans in the wake of coronavirus has hit Sh2.6 billion.

The chairperson of the Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund Jane Karuku on Monday said that they have also received food donations worth Sh880 million.

Ms Karuku said that the money has been used to purchase protective gear (PPEs) for health workers, upgrade medical facilities, and support the vulnerable hard hit hard by the pandemic.

President Kenyatta launched the kitty in April to support Kenyans through boosting hospitals to handle Covid-19 patients and support vulnerable Kenyans through providing food, clothes and other basic needs.

The kitty holds money from civil servant salary cuts, wealthy Kenyans, local corporates, multinational companies and development partners.

“We have supported some 100,000 needy people in Nairobi and its environs with Sh1,000 per week per month amounting to about Sh400 million,” Ms Karuku said during the national conference on Covid-19.

Ms Karuku added that they have allocated Sh1.5 billion to purchase PPEs throughout the duration of the pandemic across 65 hospitals.

The kitty has also raised over Sh550 million in donations from the banking and telecommunications sector. These include Sh200 million by Safaricom, KCB Group (Sh150 million) and Sh100m each from Co-operative Bank and NCBA, and Sh50m from Absa Bank.
