  • President Kenyatta to convene Extraordinary Session of National and County Governments Co-ordinating Summit on November 4 as Covid-19 infections surge.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for a meeting with the 47 county chiefs to review impact of the phased reopening of the economy amid a surge in Covid-19 infections in the country.

State House on Wednesday said that the extraordinary summit slated for November 4 will centre on talks on the effects of relaxing restrictions in late September.

In the second-phased reopening, the President allowed bars, which had been closed since March, to resume operations until 10 pm. He also extended the curfew by a further 60 days but adjusted the effective hours to between 11 pm and 4 am. The number of guest attending funerals, weddings, mosque and church services was also increased.

“The extraordinary session has been convened in light of the resurgence of Covid-19 infections across our nation, as exhibited by the fact that Kenya has recorded its highest number of Covid-19 monthly fatalities in October 2020,” reads the statement by State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena Mararo.

“The session shall also review the efficacy of the containment measures in place, as well as the impact of the easing of the restrictions that were in place.”

In the past six days, a record 80 deaths have been reported, with the national toll now at 950.

On Wednesday, Kenya reported 1,018 new infections, bringing the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases to 51,851.
