Ten years down the road, 549 columns thanks and farewell

This is my farewell column for the Business Daily. It might not be the last one I ever write but it marks the end of the current run that has lasted 10 years and 549 columns down the road.

This was one of my hardest to write. The feeling reminded me of the earlier days sitting in front of the computer screen and wondering what I got myself into.

With so many other responsibilities, I truthfully felt overwhelmed and constantly challenged to think of something new and interesting. I was the accidental columnist. But over time the whole process became easier and fun.

Sometimes ideas popped out of old lyrics or a random article or even watching old detective shows such as the “Inspector Morse”. I learnt to sniff the air in search of ideas so to speak. Beyond the fun, I came to appreciate a few things much later.

The truth is that in the early years of writing this column, I didn’t know what I didn’t know, which was anything. I came to learn the importance of stimulating thought, conversation and consideration for maximum impact for instance.

I learnt that simplicity and independent thinking pays enormously. But something else, at times, it was my choice not to be the good guy, and so yes, I lost some referrals and sometimes was met with hostility when I walked into the room.

Whatever. The social favour of these people is mostly worthless. I didn’t write to be loved or to do anyone’s bidding. I’m reminded of the words of the distinguished philosopher Black Thought (The Roots), who said, “Infinitely, go against the grain and never do what they do.”

To my faithful readers, it has been an honour and a privilege to write for you. I equally appreciate the schooling and scolding when it came.

Indeed, the occasional response to a column, whether by a call, a direct message or an email sent to me showed that someone cared enough about what I had written to voice their own opinion.

These miniscule moments touched my heart and inspired me to keep writing when I wasn’t sure people were reading the column. If you ever wondered, all I ever wanted to say is: diversify, invest long-term and understand macrotrends - remember it’s the garden that causes seeds to grow. So I hope that you understood that. I hope I helped you know more.

To Business Daily, I thank you for the privilege of affording me space to express my opinions, misplaced outrage, (dry) humour, sham ideas and sometimes just buffoonery.

Special thanks to these astute gentlemen; Luke Mulunda and Ochieng Rapuro, for taking a chance on a proper novice. I was also lucky to have the backing and support of Jack Otieno, the staunch and unflappable chief sub-editor.

I will surely miss the intensity, the process of discovery and the tight deadlines. Last but not least, to my loyal family, no more typing away into the wee hours of the morning. I promise late nights are for random chithat, Ol’ Skool and more “Forensic Files.”
