Scores of shoppers thronged the Westgate Shopping Mall on Saturday when it reopened nearly two years after a terrorist attack that left 67 people dead.

Regional retail supermarket was open for business and had discounted prices for some items in celebration of the opening.

The mall was opened by Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero who was accompanied by Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet.

Mr Kidero said the opening to the mall was a sign of Kenyans' resilience and determination despite the insecurity challenges they face.

Security was tight in and outside the mall.

IG Boinnet said the opening of the mall showed how resilient Kenyans are.

“I’m glad it’s reopened. It shows we will not be intimidated by these criminals and terrorists. We will fight back. We will lead normal lives. Whatever they do, we fight back and we are resilient,” he said.

He later posted on his Twitter page: "#Westgate Mall looks magnificent. Our new symbol of courage and resilience; strength and fortitude."

The eatery joint, ArtCaffe also resumed operations as well as Ashleys Beauty Centre and many other tenants of the mall.

Al-Shabab militia stormed the mall on a Saturday, September 21, 2013, in a brazen attack that the group said was in retaliation for Kenya's military operations in Somalia.
