Nyeri MCAs pass motion to restrict public smoking

Nyeri Members of County Assembly (MCAs) Thursday passed a motion to restrict smoking to specific zones.

While moving the motion Nominated MCA Leah Macharia said failure to enforce the law restricting smoking to designated zones had led to careless smoking.
She said the town was heavily polluted by smokers who fail to consider the health of the people surrounding them.

The ward rep urged the county government to identify and designate smoking areas to protect the public from ingesting toxic cigarette smoke.

“It has become a habit for smokers to light their cigarette anywhere in town. They need to be tamed which will also help reduce air pollution,” she said.
Majority Leader Duncan Gituanja said it would discourage smoking and consequently help reduce the number of smokers.

“If enforced smoker will find it difficult to walk to the smoking zone. Gradually they go for more hours without smoking,” he said.
