British online school opens shop in Kenya

UK online learning firm Wey Education Plc is set to launch operations in Kenya where it will be seeking to recruit students directly and through existing international schools.

The London-based multinational offers live, interactive teaching of the British curriculum for years seven to 13 including teaching International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).

It also provides services and tuition to and for other education providers and schools across a broad range of subjects, curricula and specialist vocational courses.

“We are progressing opportunities in Kenya and the Middle East to offer both our British Curriculum and English Language teaching,” Wey Education said in a statement.

Wey says its online courses offers full academic, pastoral and enrichment programmes ensuring that the young people who join the virtual school study successfully for their future career choices.

The London-based firm says it plans to work with international schools to provide supplementary teaching on a course by course basis.

Wey is the latest to join a growing list of institutional investors in Kenya’s private education who are betting on rising demand from local wealthy families, middle class and expatriates working for multinationals, foreign governments and global institutions like the United Nations.

Recent new entrants include South Africa’s Nova Pioneer and Beirut’s Sabis, competing against established names such as Hillcrest International School, St Andrews Turi, German School and Brookhouse School.

The schools cater to learners seeking international certifications such as the General Certificate of Education (GCE) which prepare them for entry to universities in Western cities.
