The plans to ease traffic flow in Nairobi moved a step ahead last week after the Transport ministry appointed a team to oversee the project.

The eight-member steering committee appointed by Transport secretary Michael Kamau on Friday will be chaired by his principal secretary Nduva Muli and will have representatives from five counties.

First on the team’s agenda is to set up the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to implement the mass rapid transit system aimed at relieving persistent traffic congestion in Nairobi’s CBD.

Others members under the steering committee include Nduva’s counterparts John Musonik (Infrastructure), Marium El Maawy (Lands, Housing and Urban Development) and county executive committee members in charge of roads from Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Murang’a and Kiambu.

The team commences its work on March 1 and will be in office for a year. Apart from updating the Transport secretary on its progress every three months, the team will be required to make recommendations on the project within six months of its appointment.

In the performance of its functions, the steering committee may solicit, receive and consider views from members of the public and other interest groups.

The team will, prior to establishing the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, oversee management, development and delivery of an integrated public transport system in the region, including undertaking and coordinating all matters relating to mass rapid transport system.
