Kenyan-based tech firm named in Time Magazine top 50

Kenya- based tech Firm Ona has been named as one of Time Magazines 50 genius companies of 2018.

Ona uses satellite imagery and information from NGOs to create a simple digital mapping system that helps health workers locate remote dwellings and identify what health services they need, in real time, in the field—vital in interventions like malaria spraying and vaccine distribution.

Ona, which is based in Kilimani, Nairobi, is only one of three African companies included on the list published in the current issue of the magazine.

“As a young company coming up on our five-year anniversary, this is an incredible honour,” says CEO Matt Berg, who was also one of the TIME 100 most influential people in 2010. “I looked at the list and recognized most of the names on it, so it’s a great affirmation that we’re pushing in the right direction and making impact.”

Mr Berg and the rest of Ona’s founding team, including chief technology officer Peter Lubell-Doughtie, head of engineering Ukang’a Dickson and head of design Roger Wong, met at Columbia University where they worked on large-scale global development projects in Africa and India.

Ona’s main operations, which are in Nairobi, has a staff of 36. It also has offices in South Burlington, Vermont in the United States.
