Mombasa commuters should brace themselves for a hectic tourism high season following the withdrawal of two ferries at the busy Likoni Channel. The Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) has withdrawn MV Jambo, one of the biggest ferries in the country, and MV Kilindini. MV Kilindini was taken to the African Marine and General Engineering dry dock for an overhaul.

MV Kilindini, a 28-year-old vessel which has capacity for 1,440 passengers and 40 vehicles, will undergo mandatory structural works which are expected to take three months.

MV Jambo has been out of service for three weeks now.

KFS managing director Bakari Gowa said one of MV Jambo’s engines developed mechanical problems. Sources at the KFS said repair work was yet to start, adding that spare parts will have to be imported.
