The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has cancelled results for 1,205 candidates over cheating in the 2017 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

The affected candidates were among the 1,727 who sat the exams in the 10 schools whose results were withheld in December, pending investigations over malpractices.

Knec chairman George Magoha said the findings had shown that in most instances, the culprits either carried unauthorised materials to examination rooms or colluded to cheat.

“It is regrettable that, in total, results of 1,205 candidates in nine of the 10 centres alleged to have been involved in examination irregularities have been cancelled in the 2017 KCSE examination,” he told journalists on Wednesday.

The council documented 64 examination centres reported to have engaged in examination malpractices. Knec had concluded investigations in 54 stations by the time the results were released on December 20.

During the release of the KCSE results, Education secretary Fred Matiang’i promised that findings of the investigation would be made public on January 18.

The investigations had established 11 candidates had mobile phones at an examination centre while nine candidates at another centre were found with unauthorised materials.
Prof Magoha said candidates whose results have been cancelled can register for the 2018 examination.
