Seven victims of Moi-era police brutality, including Kenneth Matiba’s former bodyguard, were Tuesday awarded Sh28 million for the suffering they underwent two decades ago.

The victims were arrested between December 1986 and 1990 and tortured for days by police, as they tried to extract information from them.

The seven, including Boniface Wanjohi who was Mr Matiba’s bodyguard, moved to court through lawyer Gitau Mwara accusing State agents of torturing and subjecting them to inhuman and degrading treatment.

This comes weeks after the courts awarded Mr Matiba Sh504.7 million for his unlawful detention in the early 1990s and collapsed business empire. He is back to seek an additional Sh445 million compensation.

Among the seven victims was Kuria Chege Wamere, an uncle of politician Koigi Wamwere who was arrested at his home in Engashura, Nakuru and questioned about his family relationship with Koigi.

Others are Isaac Kinya, Cornelius Mulumia, Joab Otieno Ndonji, Stanley Ngigi and Pascal Wandera.

“I am persuaded that the petitioners proved to the required standards that they were physically tortured and subjected to unwarranted cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment,” Justice John Mativo said, directing the State to pay each of them Sh4 million.
