The New Year has just begun. The year is young. You’ve come up with resolutions, goals, and objectives to make it a better year so help you, God.
You have accountability partners, in the form or friends, family and mentors to help you with that. You’ve even written them down, as much as you’ve prayed about them and told anyone who’d spare the time to hear about how awesome 2018 is going to be.
A few book titles in the self-help and spiritual sections are also probably in your to-read list or in-tray. Well, among them should be The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.
This bestselling Christian book of all time that was first published in 2002, by Zondervan begins with the begging question “What on earth am I here for?”
The book, with 40 chapters designed to be read in 40 days for maximum effect, is one of the bestselling spiritual books available.
You will need the discipline to read these chapters every day for 40 days as Warren advises. You will also need to carry your mirror for self-reflection with you on this book’s journey from faith in God to interactions with us fellow mortals.
This reviewer read it with a group of friends, where we would hold discussions of it on e-mail, as though it was a digital fellowship (for we were all busy with our lives and in different parts of the world) and made for on-the-go daily accountability partners.
The Purpose Driven Life consolidates your unseen parts with what we see through your actions.
The book emphasises the need to be a servant. The most ultimate form of leadership is serving those around us. The motive for service has got to stem from a root of love and desire to see the best in others.
Although Warren encourages and challenges the reader intermittently through the book. It is not primarily a feel-good book. But thoughts of the founder of the Saddleback Church centre around making you a better person for service to others and unto God, as propagated in the Christian faith.
Warren underscores the importance of time. He writes: “Time is your most precious gift because you only have a set amount of it. You can make more money, but you can’t make more time. When you give someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life that you’ll never get back. Your time is your life. That is why the greatest gift you can give someone is your time.”
Give yourself this precious gift this early in the year. Reflect, set your intentions, work towards them and watch what life waters and grows in your garden.
