Ian Henderson, the founder of Superior Homes, a gated-community in Athi River with 700 houses took a gamble and it paid off.

“I took a loan, sold family property and emptied all my savings to help build the firm,” he says.

Now, most of the houses priced at Sh9.9 million to Sh37.6 million have been bought by mainly Kenyan middle-class.

Mr Henderson says that among the buyers are Kenyan musicians, comedians and pilots.

‘‘Many of the buyers don’t live here, they buy two to five houses and use one as a getaway place and rent out other units,” says Mr Henderson who is a Scot.

He is also the MD of Henderson Properties, a UK-based commercial property development and letting business based in Glasgow, Scotland.

Mr Henderson says that after developing the property with a sundowner restaurant and club house, the firm has left its management to homeowners.

He is now planning the construction of a four-star hotel near Lake Elementaita and to build other homes in Kiambu, Kisumu and Kampala.
