New Indian Restaurant Opened at Nairobi SGR Station

Mayura restaurant has opened an outlet at the Nairobi SGR Terminus, giving train travellers a new dining option.

The restaurant already has outlets at The Hub in Karen and Kenrail Towers in Westlands, Nairobi.

Known for its Indian food, the menu has options of combo meals, snacks, biryani, fries, English breakfasts and more, with the most expensive dish priced at Sh700.

There are also takeaway options for anyone looking to carry their meal aboard the train.

The Mayura Express is self service for most passengers, although there are staff at hand to help patrons with heavy luggage or children with ‘in seat’ service.

“The common seating area can accommodate over 1,000 passengers, although we have a small dedicated seating area of our own which can take approximately 20 people,” said Rajiv Sehgal, the managing director.

The restaurant opens at 5.30 am and closes at 5pm.

“There is a large number of customers travelling between Nairobi and Mombasa and this will allow us to serve good food at a reasonable price,” he added. There is already a café and a mini mart at the Nairobi SGR terminus, but according to Mr Sehgal, The Mayura Express is the only option for travellers to get a complete wholesome meal for both adults and children.

“We are already a known brand in the city with our other two outlets. So, people now have an option to get the same quality food while travelling.”

Named after one of the most beautiful and sacred birds in Hindu folklore, The Mayura, which means the peacock, is also the national bird of India.

The food, although primarily Indian, has been tailored to ensure that everyone gets something of their choice.

According to Mr Sehgal, foods like the chicken fry and tandoori chicken have already become a hit with travellers. He also noted that most foods come with fries or drinks as an added combo.

Train stations and airports across the world are hub for eating and drinking, and The Mayura Express coupled with any more outlets that might spring up at the Syokimau departure lounge certainly add to the convenience and overall ambience of Nairobi’s train terminus.
