Chaos, teargas as police seal off Jacaranda grounds

Opposition Nasa supporters on Tuesday engaged in running battles with police as they tried to force themselves into Jacaranda Grounds, Nairobi, to hold a rally parallel to the presidential inauguration.

The police used teargas to disperse the youths who were marching to the grounds.

The police also beat everyone they came across, including people in the nearby estates.

The Nasa leadership has vowed to go on with their meeting despite police saying they will not allow it.

But even before the event, a spot check by the Nation revealed that raw sewage had been poured at the grounds where the dais was to be erected.

It was not clear who poured the raw sewage.

However, the supporters threatened to force themselves into the grounds and erect a dais.

This is despite the heavy presence of police officers sealed the venue off.

Regrouped

The angry Nasa supporters regrouped themselves and blocked roads, making it impossible for motorists to pass.

Nasa principals have insisted that their rally will go on and no police will stop them.

Nasa leader Raila Odinga has said he will not recognise President Uhuru Kenyatta’s presidency despite the Supreme Court upholding his relection in the repeat presidential elections held on October 26.

The Nasa rally is expected to be addressed by Mr Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi,Senator James Orengo and other Nasa leaders.

Mr Odinga has refused to honour President Uhuru Kenyatta’s swearing-in invitation at the Kasarani Stadium, saying that he will hold the parallel rally in honour of the post-election violence victims

At the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, only few people and vehicles were spotted.
