Consumer goods manufacturer Unilever has given 100 secondary school students tablets and fee vouchers worth Sh3.5 million as part of its back-to-school shopping reward programme.

Winners of the initiative dubbed Chuo Club, were awarded prizes at a ceremony held in Nairobi last week.

Five winners of the competition received Sh100,000 each, 30 others were given Sh50,000 each, 50 got Sh20,000 each while 15 others won a tablet each.

Speaking during the award presentation ceremony Agnes Kitololo, the Unilever East Africa’s Marketing Director for Foods and Refreshments, urged students to take their studies seriously and reminded them that education was the key to human development and societal progress.

“Education has the power to transform lives and is essential to our nation’s prosperity. We hope that the school fees will not only help keep our children in school but will boost their morale and quest for learning, eventually translating to a brighter future for the students and our country,” she said.

Business footprint

The Chuo Club programme was launched last January where the firm partnered with 200 retail stores under the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan which seeks to grow the company’s business footprint while increasing positive social impact.

“Through the programme we reiterate Unilever’s commitment to Kenyan students towards making their back-to-school experience more fulfilling and worthwhile,” said Ms Kitololo.

To enter the competition, students and their parent or guardians are required to buy Unilever’s products from selected retail outlets countrywide and register.
