The 2015 KCB Safari Rally brought back nostalgic moments of yesteryears as it lived up to its billing as the ‘‘world’s toughest rally’’.

The Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) ended on Sunday at the Meru ASK Showground with Jaspreet Chatthe from Kisumu-based Team Kibos in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution holding off six time champion Ian Duncan (Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution ) to take the Kibirichia stage and cross the finish line 13 seconds ahead.

Carl Tundo also in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was third.

Excited crowds were not deterred by the heavy rains as they cheered their favourite drivers.

Finland champion Tapio Laukannen jetted back to northern Europe a disappointed man after retiring from the race despite having led from day one.

‘‘It would have been helpful if our main service van was situated at Loldaiga rather than Meru town. I am devastated and disappointed, ‘‘ said the Finnish ace.

Tapio had stunned rival drivers after powering his R4 Subaru Impreza into the lead and winning day one’s three stages.

Defending champion Baldev Chager (Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution ) missed a crucial pace note point sending him further down the field at Lisa Ranch with Alastair Cavenagh (Porsche Carrera 911) grappling with electrical problems. Quentin Mitchel (Skoda Fabia S2000) retired.
