Flights departing from Kenya’s main airport resume today, offering relief to thousands of stranded passengers whose journeys were cancelled following Wednesday’s inferno at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Kenya Airways (KQ) has begun limited domestic and international operations as it tries to clear a backlog of travellers who had booked to flights for Wednesday and Thursday.

The huge fire that gutted a large section of the airport forced the government to close down JKIA.

“Local flights will operate from the cargo terminal following the shortage of airport facilities after yesterday’s (Wednesday) fire destroyed most of the facilities in the main terminal building,” KQ said in a statement.

The national carrier has restarted flights between Nairobi and Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret.

It also plans to resume on Thursday trips to Johannesburg, Entebbe and Dar es Salaam, London, Bombay and Dubai.
“All other flights remain suspended until further notice.”

The fire that took more than four hours to extinguish completely paralysed operations at JKIA leaving hundreds of travellers stranded and tonnes of export goods grounded.

No aircraft landed or left the airport the Wednesday, scuttling travel, business and holiday plans for the estimated 16,000 passengers who pass through Nairobi every day.
