Bharti Airtel, the parent company of Airtel Kenya has restructured its Africa operations into four business units and appointed top executives effective April 1, as it seeks to strengthen its operations on the continent.

The Indian mobile-telecom operator has clustered its operations in 15 African nations into two strategic business units (SBUs), while retaining Congo DR and Nigeria as independent units.

Mr VG Somasekhar, Airtel Uganda’s managing director since December 10, has been named executive operations director of the first SBU comprising Zambia, Congo B, Malawi, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Madagascar and Seychelles.

The second SBU consisting of Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Gabon, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Rwanda will be headed by Mr Christophe Soulet, who has been appointed as the unit’s executive operations director.

“These two business leaders have distinguished themselves with their exceptional understanding of the African telecoms landscape. We will leverage their experience to accelerate our market leadership opportunities and develop team capabilities as we seek to take our brand to the next level,” said the newly appointed Airtel Africa CEO Mr Christian de Faria.

Both Mr Somasekhar and Mr Soulet will be based in Nairobi.

The firm has also said that Mr Segun Ogunsanya, the managing director and chief executive for Airtel Nigeria, and Mr Louis Lubala, the managing director for DRC, will continue to lead their respective units.

Airtel, the world’s fourth largest telecoms service provider in terms of customer base, operates in 17 African countries – serving more than 68 million customers as at December 2013.
