Teachers have demanded the immediate nomination of their representative on the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) board.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) chairman Omboko Milemba said the union in September forwarded three names to the Ministry of Health for appointment but no one has been nominated to represent the interest of teachers on the board.

Kuppet representative will replace Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) secretary general Wilson Sossion who has served on the board for three years.

The union forwarded the names Omboko Milemba, Mwethi Njenga and Julius Korir for nomination.

“The aim of writing this letter is to inform you that we have not received any communication from your office in regard to the issue of representation to NHIF board,” said Mr Milemba in a letter to Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu.

He went on: “We realise that many changes are taking place at the NHIF and we request your urgent action and sanction the nominations to ensure that the teachers are represented on the NHIF board.”

On August 28, 2015, then Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia asked Kuppet to provide three names for nomination.

Mr Sossion served on the NHIF board from September 3, 2012 until September 3, 2015.

Section 4(1) of the NHIF Act No 9 of 1998 and the Statute Law (Miscellaneous) Act No 18 empower both unions to jointly nominate one person to the board.
