NSE 20 Share Index extends gains by 26.23 points

Prices of blue chip shares on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) continued their rising trend on Thursday as the main index gained 26.23 points to close the day at 4153.31 points.

The NSE All-Share Index (NASI) also gained to hit 144.95 points, showing that prices rose across the board in the market.

The bourse, which had hit a low of 4080 points for the main index last month, is showing signs of recovery in line with global markets that have stabilised after being under siege for days due to a slowing Chinese economy.

Investors’ wealth as shown by market capitalisation also increased on Thursday by Sh34 billion to Sh2.036 trillion from the previous day’s value.

Safaricom represented the highest traded volume for any company or sector at Sh68.4 million – out of a total turnover of Sh391 million – at a price of Sh15.20 per share. It was an improvement from the previous day’s price of Sh14.60.

The banking sector was the second largest mover with 18.87 per cent of the day’s traded volume followed by the energy and petroleum sector, which took 18.51 per cent of the turnover.
