Kenya Airways #ticker:KQ has appointed Sebastian Mikosz, a Polish national, as group managing director.

The appointment is effective June 1, 2017, the airline's board chairman Michael Joseph announced on Thursday.

Mr Mikosz has more than 20 years of professional experience in executive management in both public and private sector, including as CEO of ezky.pl, a leading central European online travel agency and LOT Polish Airlines, Mr Joseph noted in a statement.

He takes over from Mr Mbuvi Ngunze who has headed the troubled airline for the past two years and was due for retirement in March but had to stay on pending the recruitment of the new CEO.

The appointment of Mr Mikosz ends months of the global search for the airline CEO, in a recruitment process carried out by international firm Spencer Stuart.

"In December 2016, the Board engaged the services of an international search firm, Spencer Stuart to assist the Board in identifying a successor to Mbuvi as Group Managing Director and CEO. I am pleased to announced the Board has finally reached an unanimous decision in this matter," Mr Joseph said.

KQ had earlier indicated that the new CEO would likely be an expatriate, and Mikosz' appointment marks the return of an expatriate CEO, since Brian Davies, a Briton, who led the company for seven years until 1999.
