Tuskys Supermarkets is set to open its second specialty clothing store at T-Mall shopping complex along Nairobi’s Lang’ata Road, targeting the middle class and professionals in the neighbouring middle-class residential estates.

The apparel store dubbed ‘Tuskys Mavazi’ comes two years after the retailer opened its first such clothing branch along Nairobi’s Tom Mboya Street dubbed ‘Tuskys Essential’. Tuskys Mavazi, which officially opened on Friday, will stock ladies and men’s professional attires and kids wear as well as baby clothing and accessories.

“The new clothes store is a replica of the Tom Mboya one and it has already created 25 new jobs for skilled personnel,” Tuskys chief executive Daniel Githua said in an interview.

“This move was informed by the fact that our ‘Tuskys Essential’ was doing well.” The new apparel store occupies 20,000 square feet ground floor space at T-Mall. It cost the retail chain Sh50 million to stock up.

Tuskys had in 2015 designed and customised three of its own clothing labels, where the clothes are manufactured under contract in China for the retailer.

The retailer says it is attracted by the bigger profit margins in clothing and apparel business compared to food and other products sold in supermarkets.

“We do not have in our pipeline an exact number of how many more such stores we would be opening as we are opening one by one and make each a success on their own,” said Mr Githua.

Tuskys is now stepping up its direct competition with clothing and apparel retailers such as Jade, Mr Price, Deacons, Woolworths, Kings Collection and other stand-alone shops.

The retailer says it is not in the bidding for the Thika Road Mall space about to be vacated by troubled retailer, Nakumatt Holdings.
