The government has bowed to pressure and agreed to pay striking lecturers the Sh10 billion they have been demanding.

University Education Principal Secretary Collete Suda on Thursday said a Sh5.2-billion balance would be paid to the more than 27,700 university staff before July 31.

The government had already released Sh4.8 billion to the university employees but they had rejected it demanding the full amount.

“I am pleased to inform you that the National Treasury has granted authority to the ministry to incur the expenditure of Sh5.2billion towards the payment of the Collective Bargaining Agreement,” said Prof Suda in a letter dated July 13 and addressed to Prof Paul Kanyari, the chairperson of Inter-Public Universities Council Consultative Forum.
