The High Court has temporarily halted a disputed Sh13 billion wind power project aimed at generating electricity in Kinangop following an escalated compensation row.
Justice Munyao Sila issued the orders stopping implementation of the 60MW project which was set to kick off in two weeks after 10 area residents moved to court on Tuesday.
The judge stopped three companies involved with the implementation of the project from proceeding with it.
Justice Sila also reversed a decision by the Nyandarua County Commissioner summoning one of the residents, Mahugu Gatebe Njuguna, and his children over the project through a March 20 letter.
“An injunction order is hereby issued restraining the three companies from implementing and operating the 60MW Kinangop Wind Park Project. An order stopping the decision to summon Mr Njuguna is also issued,” said the judge.
Through lawyer Kibe Mungai, the residents sued three companies involved with the project; the National Environmental Management Authority (Nema), the Energy and Petroleum ministry, the county governments of Nakuru and Nyandarua, the Inspector General and the Attorney General.
They alleged that the land for the project was fraudulently acquired, the initiative does not meet global standards and no environmental impact assessment had been done hence it poses a health hazard.
