The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has cut retail fuel prices due to lower crude oil international prices and a stronger shilling to the dollar.

Starting Saturday, June 15, a litre of super petrol will retail at Sh108.18 down from Sh113.68 in Nairobi while diesel prices have been trimmed 1.8 per cent to Sh99.16.

However, kerosene will retail Sh2.06 more than the current price (Sh79.46), piling pressure on households that rely on the commodity for cooking and lighting.

The regulator attributed the kerosene price increase to a lag in the processing of oil at the country’s refinery in Changamwe.

The ERC said on Friday the international price of a barrel of Murban crude fell 1.89 per cent to $103.65 last month.

This is the third time ERC is reviewing fuel prices for the past three months.

The regulator reviews domestic energy prices every month, with adjustments made depending on fluctuations in international energy prices.

Kenya introduced a law allowing the energy regulator to set the maximum retail price of fuel in 2010, after prices soared, hurting consumers.
