Speaker orders Kimunya to reveal airport tender details

Transport Minister Amos Kimunya has been directed to issue a statement on the status of the controversial tender for the construction of a Sh55 billion terminal next to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Temporary speaker Joyce Laboso directed Mr Kimunya to prepare a statement for release Wednesday subject to further direction from the chair.

Mr Kimunya said the tender was yet to be awarded because it was before the Public Procurement Oversight Authority Administrative Appeals Board.

“I want the guidance of the Speaker if we should respond to this matter which is before the PPOA administrative review board,” Mr Kimunya said.

Belgut MP Charles Keter had sought to know why the tender for the Greenfield Project was being cancelled when the procurement process appeared to have been above board.

Media reports had claimed that the tender had been awarded to a Chinese company - Anhui Construction Engineering Group – and had been cancelled by Mr Kimunya.

The tender is for the construction of a new terminal and runway, a vision 2030 project meant to decongest JKIA.
