What you need to know:

Global electronics and home appliances manufacturer Samsung has announced that it will be rolling out environmentally conscious products in the local market in an effort to address the climate change crisis.

The devices, including washing machines and refrigerators, have been incorporated with digital inverter technology, to reduce the amount of energy needed to run, now that the cost of electricity has become a big issue.

“We are aware of the challenge of global warming, so we are taking the right steps to ensure that all our products are energy efficient,” noted Erick Otieno, the regional head of product marketing, home appliances, at Samsung.

Leveraging on new technologies such as artificial intelligence, consumers will also be able to diagnose the level of energy their devices consume, and respond accordingly. The AI feature will also enable consumers to interact with the products with ease, as they can communicate amongst each other.

“We have come up with what we call the smart energy saving mode, in all our bespoke linen up. What this does is that it not only enables you to know, but also control the energy your device is consuming. If say you are not at home, and you need to switch on or off your fridge, it notifies you and you can do this remotely,” noted Otieno.

Last month, the firm launched an e waste management program, which would grant customers an opportunity to resubmit Samsung products which they no longer needed for recycling.

“It is a very interesting year for us because it is one of our focal points when it comes to sustainability and I believe with the kind of efforts that we have put in place on a global level, not just here in Kenya, we believe that we will be able to be more sustainable,” noted Otieno.

Going forward, he says that most of their products will be packaged using eco-friendly materials, as they seek to transition to a fully sustainable firm.

Besides sustainability, the new product line up also focuses on productivity, as well as design. Some of the products recently introduced in the market include the 90-inch TV sets, whose remote controls are incorporated with solar chips, to curb on battery waste.
