  • KRA Southern region coordinator Joseph Tanui said the department could not have collected the amount of money without the implementation of stringent border control measures.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has attributed reforms at the Port of Mombasa for the increase in targeted revenue by more than Sh17 billion in the first half of the 2020/2021 financial year despite Covid-19 disruptions.

According to KRA report, customs and border control department at the port and its two border points of Lunga-Lunga and Holili, collected Sh200.955 billion surpassing a target of 183.578 billion in the half financial year, July-December 2020.

KRA Southern region coordinator Joseph Tanui said the department could not have collected the amount of money without the implementation of stringent border control measures.

"The use of technology and the proactivity of customs officers who have been vigilant to ensure contraband trade is contained at the Port of Mombasa has made the port less attractive for smuggling and international crimes. In line with the KRA's reforms and modernisation initiatives, customs has undertaken major programmes over the last decade which have yielded fruits especially this time of Covid-19 pandemic," said Mr Tanui.

The regional coordinator said cooperation between the authority and the other relevant local and international players operating at the port have succeeded to prevent the facility from being used as a conduit for contraband trade.

"We have sealed most of revenue leaks which is in line with international efforts to combat transnational organised crime which has been a hole losing revenues. The frequent concealment of high-end vehicles declared as household goods or other items on transit have not been reported in the past one year which is a milestone," said Mr Tanui.

In April last year, KRA officials nabbed seven luxury cars at Mombasa port, that were believed to have been stolen from United Kingdom. They had been declared as household goods destined to Uganda.

Speaking during the International Customs day, Mr Tanui said when pandemic was its peak, the authority had to realign its operations at the customs.
