The government has announced that there will be no movement of Covid-19 patients across the counties as the country reported 742 new cases, raising its tally of declared infections to 56,601.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe yesterday urged counties that have not set up proper treatment centres to do so now.

He said that with a positivity rate of 14.2 percent Monday, the country is headed to yet another tumultuous week of fighting the virus and that private hospitals are already overwhelmed.

“Private hospitals lack enough space for infectious diseases and public hospitals are bound to remain the main treatment centres for Covid-19. So I urge those counties that have not invested in isolation units, intensive care unit (ICU) and High Dependency Units (HDU) beds to do so quickly because is very clear that there will be no movement from one county to another,” he said.

Mr Kagwe added: “If the virus continues to escalate in the manner that it is doing currently, then it means that each county will have to take care of its own”.

His confirmation that private hospitals are overwhelmed is indicative that soon even public ones may soon not have capacity to take in more patients.

A recent Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council audit showed that out of the 7,612 bed capacity countrywide, Kenya only has 319 ICU beds for Covid-19.
