Six counties are set to benefit from funding, high tech medical equipment and food donations in the fight against high maternal deaths.

Migori, Mandera, Marsabit, Wajir, Isiolo and Lamu were picked as beneficiaries by the Private Sector Health Rartners (PSHP). They account for about 50 per cent of all maternal deaths in the country.

Safaricom, Huawei, Philips, MSD, Unilever and GSK will complement on-going efforts by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) through the Kenya Healthcare Federation.

“We are delighted to make these announcements today in support of the United Nations’ Every Woman Every Child (EWEC) initiative,” said Dr Olajide Ademola, UNFPA country representative to Kenya.

Philips Kenya and the Philips Foundation will pilot a mobile obstetric monitoring solution and provide outreach kits for early detection of high-risk pregnancies by health workers, enabling timely referral to appropriate levels of care in Wajir.

MSD/Merck is investing $1.5 million in designing and testing innovative approaches to adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health service delivery in Migori and Mandera. In Mandera, the initiative is set to build a Community Life Center in collaboration with the Health ministry, County government, Philips and UNFPA.

Unilever will expand their current project with UNFPA and Amref on maternal and newborn health and hygiene in Migori.

Safaricom #ticker:SCOM and Huawei will design video conference facilities to enable remote specialised consultations for patients and medical education for medical staff in Lamu.
