BAT Kenya names new managing director

The managing director of British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya Keith Gretton is set to retire from the cigarette manufacturer on May 1 after serving in the position for less than two years.

Mr Gretton, who took office on July 1, 2015, will be replaced by Ms Beverly Spencer-Obatoyinbo.

“The board would like to thank Keith for his contribution to BAT Kenya. During his tenure, he has overseen market share growth for the company,” BAT said in a statement Tuesday.

“He has further driven the sustainability of the business through the introduction of changes in work practices and the implementation of efficiency initiatives which stand the company in good stead for the future,” it added.

Ms Spencer-Obatoyinbo joined the cigarette company’s UK-based parent BAT Group in 1996, holding regional positions including marketing director BAT Nigeria, general manager BAT Egypt and BAT Swiss area director.

“The wealth of experience and commercial acumen that Mrs Spencer-Obatoyinbo has gained from working within BAT Group’s operations across numerous jurisdictions will be of immense value to BAT Kenya,” the Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed firm said.
