Uhuru picks Narendra Raval as Egerton chancellor

Kenyan tycoon Narendra Raval is the new chancellor of Egerton University following his appointment by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Mr Naval, also known as Guru, is the chairman of the family-owned construction materials manufacturer Devki Group, which owns several businesses, including National Cement and Devki Steel Mills.

The firm, which is East Africa's largest building materials company, exports metal sheets to various markets in the region such as Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.

President Kenyatta appointed Mr Raval alongside Prof Joseph Ndung’u whom he picked as the new chancellor of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

They will both serve a five-year term.

Last year, Mr Raval broke ground on a multibillion shilling plant in Kwale, promising to create more than 1,000 direct jobs.

The plant, which is set to be completed in the next two years, is expected to generate an estimated 9,000 indirect jobs.
