  • The arrears have pilled pressure on City Hall’s ability to hit its target of Sh615.8 million from house rents in the year to June.

Tenants owe City Hall Sh224 million in rent arrears across 21 estates amid opposition by politicians to eviction of the defaulters.

Director of Housing Marion Rono told the County Assembly Budget and Appropriations committee that lack of resources and political interference have hurt efforts to recover the unpaid rent.

The arrears have pilled pressure on City Hall’s ability to hit its target of Sh615.8 million from house rents in the year to June.

“Some of the tenants have not paid rent for six years but we are facing challenges when some politicians incite the tenants whenever our officials go to evict them,” Mrs Rono told the committee yesterday.

Nairobi County has 16, 629 houses ranging from single rooms to four-bedroomed units across Bahati, Kaloleni, Old Ngara, Jericho, Woodley and Eastlands, among other estates.

The lowest rent is Sh800 for a single room on Landhies Road and Bahati estate while the highest is Sh16,000 in Woodley. In 2016, City Hall stopped eviction efforts for reasons that were not disclosed.
