Civil servants are set to benefit from 620 houses in nine-storey blocks planned for Machakos, Embu and Kiambu counties.

State Department of Housing and Urban Development said it has identified land in the three counties where old bungalows will be demolished to pave way for the blocks comprising one, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

The National Environment Management Authority (Nema) on Tuesday invited comments on the planned developments, which will see civil servants allocated houses to live or buy through mortgage.

In Kiambu County, the Nema notice shows land has been identified on Kiambu Road opposite the AP Chapel within the Indian Bazaar Government Pool Housing Scheme where 200 units comprising of one-, two- and three-bedroom houses on three blocks rising five floors, will be built. The ground floor is reserved for parking.

In Machakos County, 200 units are planned. Two blocks rising five floors will accommodate two-bedroom houses while a third block will host 100 three-bedroom units. The ground floor has been reserved for parking bays.

In Embu, plans are afoot to demolish 15 bungalows formerly housing senior staff to pave the way for 220 housing units on three blocks rising five floors. They will comprise units of two- and three-bedroom apartments.

Nema said members of the public have 30 days to submit written memoranda on the planned developments expected to ease housing shortage for civil servants across the county headquarter towns.

The houses will be built under the Civil Servants Housing Scheme Fund (CSHSF), an initiative by the government to facilitate its employees to own houses. To date CSHSF has benefited 3,072 civil servants with more projects planned for execution in various counties.
