Savannah targets new phase of rail project

Savannah Cement is eyeing the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Phase Two and big ticket projects across East Africa to grow sales.

The local cement manufacturer’s managing director Ronald Ndegwa said increased use of its products in multi-billion shilling projects in Kenya and across East Africa has seen it inject more money in a new manufacturing plant.

Mr Ndegwa spoke at the EABC Business Excellence Awards 2018 Gala dinner where Savannah was named the best East African Company in the building and construction category.

“The EABC Business Excellence Awards programe is an affirmation that our products meet international standards, especially now when intra-Africa trade is becoming a reality. Such opportunities demand strict adherence to quality standards including external and independent audits,” he said.

Mr Ndegwa lauded the recent signing of the Sh3 trillion African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement saying it woud open new opportunities across East Africa and beyond.

Savannah Cement also scooped second runners up award in the Best East African-Innovation category.

Savannah Cement products were used for concrete works on the Makindu-Kambu section , Emali and at the Nairobi terminus (Syokimau Station) of the SGR.

Its cement was used during construction of the 22 storey University of Nairobi tower, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport expansion,  Outer Ring Road, Nairobi, Uganda’s  600 MW Karuma Dam, Nairobi’s Garden City and Two Rivers malls as well as South Sudan’s Juba Water and Sewerage Works. 

Savannah Cement also exports its products to Uganda, Rwanda, DRC, South Sudan and Tanzania.
