Members of the Migori County Assembly have adjourned their sessions ahead of next month’s polls, after failing to secure a send-off package.

The 60 MCAs had been demanding a Sh204 million retirement package but the county government could not pay saying it was broke.

Yesterday, Mr Tom Opere who has been the acting assembly clerk was confirmed for the office and sworn in immediately  before the members went home.

Mr Opere  had been appointed by the assembly’s public service board following the dismissal of Mr Patrick Wakine over graft allegations.

The MCAs were to go home two weeks ago but decided to extend their sittings awaiting  to be paid. They would come   to the assembly every morning. The 60 MCAs had been demanding a Sh204 million retirement package but the county government could not pay saying it was broke. Each of them expected  to get at least Sh1.5 million send-off pay.

Most of the MCAs lost in the party primaries and the send-off package would have come handy.

One of the ward reps, Abedi Maroa  who is defending his Masaba seat on ODM ticket, said the  cash is their right.

“It (the package) is within the law  and there is nothing illegal because it was awarded by the courts and  the assembly should  find money  to pay us. Even  if we adjourn, we will not stop from pursuing the money,” he stated.
